He’s been doing it for 10 years, recording a wide variety of local, regional, and national artists. With hundreds of credits on projects from renowned musicians including Welshly Arms, Brent Kirby and His Luck, Ohio Sky, Nights, and Ray Flanagan and The Authorities, Jim Stewart has made a name for himself as one of the most talented engineers in Cleveland, Ohio. Talk to the artists he’s worked with and they’ll speak to his ability, professionalism and creativeness. First, though, they’ll talk about his enthusiastic, unassuming personality, which fosters a collaborative atmosphere while recording and mixing. Listen to an album Jim has engineered; the quality of his work speaks for itself.
Jim began his career studying at the Recording Workshop in Chillicothe in 2005. Shortly after graduating he started at Metrosync studios, where he quickly went from intern, to staff engineer, working there until the studio closed in 2009. From there, he worked at Ante Up Audio until 2011. Jim then tested his entrepreneurial side for the next four years by working as a freelance engineer at many of the major studios in Northeast Ohio. He thrived during this time, becoming a household name in Cleveland’s music industry. He was, and continues to be, graciously credited in numerous articles published by Scene Magazine, The Plain Dealer, and Pressure Life Magazine. He is said to be a “local hero” with the “Midas touch sonically.”
The demand that Jim’s reputation created during his freelance years required a dedicated studio available at his disposal. In 2015, Jim designed and built an incredible-sounding studio in downtown Cleveland, the city that he loves. If he’s not currently there working on his latest project, chances are he’s holed up at a really cool venue recording an album live.
